My brother-in-law asked me to hang some shelves and pegboard in his storage area but it was constructed with metal studwork. I'm used to wood studs. What do I use to secure/anchor the shelves and pegboard so they are solid.

Depending on how much the shelves will have to support, you may be able to get away with drywall screws.
