Question:

When our living room hardwood floor was refinished, the contractor hung a plastic sheet to prevent dust from escaping into other parts of the house. Unfortunately, he taped the bottom of the sheet to the slate floor in the foyer. When the tape was removed, it left a glue residue on the slate. I haven't been able to remove it. Do you have a suggestion for removing the glue? Also, can slate be restored to its original sheen? It looks like previous owners waxed it.

Answer:

Spread a bit of peanut butter on the residue glue overnight and then just wipe it off. To get the sheen back, neutralize the wax with any oil thinner - varsol might even do it.
