Question:

I am considering installing pine panelling on the ceiling at our cottage. The paneling is in radom lengths from 6 - 16 feet and is 7 1/4 inches wide. Would it be appropriate to install this using 18 gauge 1 1/2 brad nails or should I be using something else?

Answer:

You'll have to strap the ceiling first baut the 1.5" finishing nails should do it - if the boards are a half inch or thicker though, I'd use 2". You should even be able to get away with surface nailing the strps next to the wall and then nailing only the tongues from there across the ceiling. You might take some photographs as you go because in time, the 7.25 ceiling panels may disconfigure and you may have to add more fasteners in the middles of them - they should be either brass or stainless steel because condensation above them may cause rust.

In the interests of retaining credibility that I worked several decades to establish and in fairness to all, I don’t comment on various (building, electrical, plumbing) codes, brand-specific products, recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
