Question:

I will adding a subfloor to my daughter's kitchen before laying ceramic tiles. How far apart should the screws be? Also, I will be placing laminate flooring in her dining and living rooms. I thought I should also screw down these floors to prevent future squeeks. Again, how far apart for the screws?

Answer:

No matter where you put sub-flooring over sub-flooring, the scres have to be 6 to 8 inches apart in the flied of the new sheets and 3 to 4 inches apart along the butted edges. You should also make sure that none of the new screws go through the new sub-flooring and into joists as this is where squeaks will probably start. Quarter-inch underlayment should be applied in the same manner but the screws can be as short as an inch.
