I am trying to install a plywood sub-floor on the concrete floor in my basement. Can there be any "floating sub-floor". How can I install it?
Answer:
If you plan to install it in spite of the headaches it may cause you in the future, just lay in 1X3 cedar sleepers 16" O.C. with strips of white beadboard between them. Keep everything (sleepers, beadboard, plywood) at least a quarter to a half inch away from everything that is going to stay there perminently (walls, jack posts, stair stringers, etc.). Now you can lay your T&G plywood sheathing in and attach it to the sleepers with 1.25" fasteners (preferably screws). The beadboard cuts down on echo when you walk on it. There are other systems but they take away from the ceiling heigth and you usually can't afford that.
