Question:

I'm redoing the floor in my back porch and would like to use ceramic tile to finish. What effect will the cold have on it? Winter temperatures inside could be around the freezing point. I heard you say on a program that there needs to be a minimum of 1 inch of wood underneath. I was thinking of using 5/8 treated plywood for the sub-floor and 3/8 for the underlay. Would this be ok?

Answer:

There are adhesives on the market now that are far less temperature sensitive but you need not one inch but one-and-a-half inches of wood under the tiles to retain their integrity. Because you're applying them in a delicate area for temperature and high traffic, I'd probably want to pour them into a 2" or 3" bed of concrete which was properly re-enforced
