Question:

When I go to nail two pieces of wood together they split and I remember my dad doing something that would prevent that. What is it?

Answer:

I probably use the same system as he did. I turn the nail over and tap the point of it so it blunts. Actually, it doesn't blunt, it forms burrs on the tip and that permits it to cut through wood rather than forcing its way through.
