Question:

I would like to build an open-air roof for my deck and would appreciate any advice you can provide. My deck is approximately 12' x 11' and is made of pressurized wood. It sits on a 12-foot length of angle iron, that is bolted to the house, and is supported by seven 4" x 4" uprights that are in pre-formed concrete stands that, in turn, are on large patio stones. My plan is to erect seven 4" x 4" uprights. Can I have these sit on the deck and affix them to the existing uprights? If so, what is the best way to do this, lag bolts? Then I will put a perimeter around the top of these uprights. I do not want this to touch the roof, so it will be a few inches away from the roof and will angle slightly down, away from the house. What type and size of wood should I use for this? (E.g. treated wood, 1" x 4", 1" x 6")? Then I plan to affix 6 additional pieces of wood, 2' apart, to run from the house to the end of the deck (these would be approx. 11' long). Would I use the same type of wood as for the perimeter?

Answer:

I don't see anything wrong with your idea but those seven uprights you speak of should be tied together somewhere about half way up with something so you gain integrity. They can sit on top of your deck but because they're part of a superstructure, support should telescope to the 4X4s under the deck. The most practical way to accomplish this would probably be to apply 2X4 straps with lag screws on two sides. I'd want to make sure the 2X4s face the house and not the side yard and they'll have to be at least three feet long.
