Question:

My kitchen floor is hardwood underneath one layer of 1970s cushion flood & another layer of 1930s linoleum. Sometimes the linoleum comes off easily. Other times it leaves behind a paper backing and glue which I've been scraping up. I've tried soaking a patch with water to see if that makes it easier but it just turns the glue into goop and makes it smell bad. What next?

Answer:

If you want to recover the hardwood, why not let the people who are going to sand it do the dirty work for you. They have the equipment to do it in minutes. Otherwise, you'll end up doing exactly what you've been doing and putting up with both the mess and the odour. I wonder if noxious fumes are also part of this project; professionals are equipped to deal with that too.
