Question:

I would like to install hardwood flooring in my cottage. Although it is winterized, it is not heated when we are not there. We vist it one day out of the week. We have been told that hardwood floors are not recommended because of temperature changes and moisture. Is it possible to avoid the problem of the wood cracking when the temperature dips below zero in the house? What is your opinion on this subject? Would you go with hardwood? If so what type?, finished, unfinished ?

Answer:

Hopefully none of the hardwood flooring on the market will be that sensitive to temperature. As long as it is dry, you should have no problem. If you did, there would have to be a lot of vacant and semi-vacant houses heated throughout the winter. Properly installed, I don't see a problem.
