Question:

We are tired of painting/repairing pine railings on our cottage deck. What is your opinion of the vinyl/clad railings now available? Strength? Longevity?Cleaning? Note: the deck is large, irregular shape, 2 sets of stairs.

Answer:

Most of the vinyl products are too slipery to be safe in these situations and although they have a lot of strenth and longevity, they're hard to install in a way that retains that strength. Cleaning them doesn't seem to be a problem.
