Question:

The north side of bungalow has painted wood steps leading up to the painted wood landing. Both, I am just finding out are extremely slippery. It is open to elements. Until I decide what I wish to do next spring, what advice would you give me to prepare me for winter & prevent slip/fall in this area?

Answer:

For now, and possibly in all future winters, keep a bag of urea handy and spread it on both steps and landing. This is a form of horticultural fertilizer but it melts ice very quickly. You should be able to find it at any local nursery. If they're both still slippery in summer, paint them both and just before the paint dries, sprinkle a bit of sand on them with something like a salt shaker.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
