Question:

Presently in my kitchen I have wall paper around my stove. The wall paper on the wall have been there long before I bought the house. My question is this: When I remove the wall paper there usually remain the white backing of the wall paper. Can I leave it and put the ceramic wall glue over it and then the tiles? Or is it necessary to remove all traces of the wall paper? Michele.

Answer:

Michele, Unfortunately you will have to remove the wallpaper backing before installing the ceramic tiles. The reason is that the tile glue will not be adhering to the wall but rather the residual paper and that would be a most unsuitable surface. Further, the tile glue will moisten the paper and could make it pull from the wall.Usually, warm soapy water rubbed on the paper backing and then scraped off is sufficient to remove the backing. If this fails, most hardware stores will carry a stronger solution to apply to the backing before scraping. Be sure to allow the wall to dry completely before applying tile glue. Good luck and take care. Tim Crozier
