Question:
Hello Janik,
I have a 50yr old home with all the original wood cabinetry, counters and backsplash. I haven't the money to renovate the entire kitchen but would like to add some color by replacing the backsplash. It appears to be a sheet of material (I'm not sure what it's made of) pressed to look like 4X4 tiles. Would it be very expensive to have this material removed and new ceramic tiles put up? The kitchen is no larger than 9X9 and the backsplash (standard height from countertop to bottom of cupboards)covers less than two of the walls.
Thanks,
Liette Bettez
Answer:
Liette,
The work involved for this type of project is as follows:
-Removal of the existing wall covering.
-Repair or replacement of drywall as needed.
-Installation of tile.
-Application of sealer (only needed if using natural stone).
-Application of grout.
Factors such as the type of tile being used (ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, etc.), size as well as the type of application (90-degree, 45-degree, pattern, etc.) will affect the overall cost of the project which could range anywhere from $1,200.00 to $1,700.00; cost of tile itself not included.
