Question:

I have water leaking behind the eave and in front of the facia in about at 1 foot section of my roof. I inspected the edge and there is a drip edge along the entire edge. There is no seam in this location. I was wondering what might be causing the water to leak under the drip edge? How far over the drip edge should the first course of shingle overhang (it is almost even with the edge of the drip edge)? And if they are not over far enough how can this be fixed (the house is only 3 years old)

Answer:

Drip edge is to help keep the overhang from bending over from the heat over time. When the 1" over hang folds down the water can sometimes drip behind the gutter. When the first row of shingles is placed 1/4"-1/2" past the drip edge. The drip edge should have a lip of about 1/2" leaving an overall overhang of 3/4"-1". If the first row is 1" over the drip edge then it defeats the purpose of having a drip edge. Sometimes your gutters loosen and need to be re-nailed in place.
