Question:
I have a cottage in Thunder Bay the cottage has a two storie addition on one end of the cottage. Both levels of roof are insulated with 210# asphalt shingles. Can both levels be strapped with 1 X 2's and the metal roofing applied over top the 210# shingles? Also the outside walls on the two storie level has vinyl siding, does this have to be removed and flashing installed on the lower level roofing where it meets the wall on the second level?
Answer:
Hello,
Never install a new roof over an old roof. Always remove the existing shingles and start with a clean, solid substrate. Yes the siding must be removed and I would recommend installing ice and water shield up the vertical wall and onto the roof surface. Turn the metal roofing material up the wall and install a metal counter flashing and reinstall the siding and J trim.
