Question:
I have an older home with cedar shingles. These shingles based on the age of the home have to be classed as no 1 cedar. The home is at lease 80 years old. My question is what is the life expectancy of these shingles baring any unforeseen weather or abuse? I heard that these shingles last at least 100 years.
We had a major wind and took out some of the shingles and an adjuster is coming by to look at the home. I am afraid, because I do not know anything about this that I may not get the roof adjusted properly.
Can you give me any advise on this matter when I have to negotiate this type of repair work?
Answer:
Cedar shingles have a life expectancy between 50 and 60 years. Many people use cedar shingles in western Canada because of the climate and the drier weather. Here in Ontario our weather is more humid and harsher weathers that cause cedar shingles not to last as long. In time they develop mold and moss on the shingle and that’s not so attractive.
