Question:
I am a single parent (female) with a 5-year old house. I have noticed over the last couple of years, leaking in the Spring thaw from the area where two slopes of the roof meet. The water appears to back up under the roof shingles and drips down the exterior brick wall and down the interior wall of the garage. I know that I need to have someone come out and look at it and I'd like to get some quotes but I don't know exactly what questions to ask. I don't want to be taken just because I am a female and not knowledgeable about roofing. Can you provide me with any guidance? Thank you.
Answer:
Hello,
The shingles at the eave in the area that you describe must be removed and disposed of (usually 6' up the slope). If there is a metal valley it also must be removed ( these can be reused if they are not damaged upon removal) This area must have ice and water shield installed and new shingles. The new shingles will not match exactly because the existing shingles are 5 years old and will be faded.
Ask friends and family if they can reccommend a roofer that has done work for them and if they were satisfied.
Good Luck,
