Question:

I am interested in installing a cedar shake roof on a gazebo I am building . Could you help me with starting the first row and what to do next ?

Answer:

(1) You should install felt paper at remainder of roof. (2) Install the first row along the eave making sure that it’s straight and has an even overhang of 1" along the eaves. (3)Chalk a line across the first row allowing 4" shingle shake exposure. Make sure the line chalked is even at both ends. (4)set your next row of shingles staggered (e.g. if shingle peace is 6", stager the next shingle at 3')so the slots in the row doesn't land up one on top of each other allowing water to penetrate. (5) Continue each step till you reach the top of the roof. Anthony Barresi at Century Roofing & General Repairs Ltd. 738-1774
