Question:
I am obtaining estimates to have my roof replaced. My home is 100 plus years old and although I am not sure. I am being told I have 3 layers of shingles over the original planks. When I look in the attic the planks have no spaces between. After the shingles are removed is it a must to put plywood on or if the planks are in good repair can the shingles be applied withouth the plywood.???
Answer:
Hello,
If the planks are in good condition and are uniform in thickness shingles can be applied without the plywood. The shingles will follow the contour of the planks. Be sure to use underlay such as 30lb felt (tar paper)
