Question:

Hello, could you please tell me the proper way of installating the flashing on the roof. Do you put tar paper or water barrier under the flashing? Also it is necessary to put tar paper or water barrier membrane under the asphalt shingles? We had our roof done two years ago and it leaks at many places. In the garage we had many leaks and there is nothing under the flashing just the metal and in one place we can actually see a hole. Any suggestion would be most welcome. Thank you, Ms. Michal

Answer:

Hello, Ice and water shield should be installed at the eave and tar paper on the remainder of the roof. Metal step flashing must be installed beneath the flashing that runs vertically. It is also good practice to install ice and water shield under the flashings to prevent wind driven rain from entering. Good Luck, Matt Churchill CP Roofing & Metal of Ottawa Ltd. 613-821-4455
