Question:
Hello.
We recently had a new composite shingle roof installed. This was a complete tear off of everything even the plywood was removed and all installed new. When it rains, all along our fireplace inside our house the ceiling leaks causing water pockets in our ceiling inside the house. The roofing contractor is saying that this is not his roofing problem. The roof before never had this problem or any leak problem. It was just an older shake style roof that needed to be replaced.
My chimney is approx. 60" wide and when they did the roof they did not install a crickett to divert the water from sitting behind the chimney. Water builds up in deep puddles behind the chimney then leaking into the ceiling. Is the roofing Contratcor responsible for repairing the roof correctly and ceiling damage? Is it required by code that a crickett be installed on chimneys to divert water? Any information you can supply us is appreciated. Thank you."
Answer:
Hello,
Crickets have been replaced with metal "backpans" which are seamless. Also, for additional protection, ice and water shield should be installed around the complete perimeter of the chimney. This is not required by code but is good practice.
