Question:
I am replacing my roof and have had several contractors quoting the job on a 40 year shingle.
My house was a custom built home in 1959 and is a brick ranch with a low pitch roof (76 feet long). I have two roof vents, however there are gable vents at each end approximately four feet by three feet.
If I stay with roof vents I have been advised by three of the contractors that I would need six roof vents. They also suggested an alternative, ridge venting. I like the idea and would like to have a ridge vent as opposed to the traditional roof vents.
However, one contractor told me that a ridge vent wouldn't be practical because the draft caused by the gable vents (during a storm)would draw snow into my attic where it would settle and cause damage. Sounds ridiculous to me but I'm not a roofer.
Incidentally, I have never had a problem with leaking or snow in my attic.
Any advice?
Thanks,

Answer:
Hello Bob,
Ridge vent is the best method of venting an attic space and one can never be over ventilated. Be sure your soffitts are open to allow air intake and to avoid a negative pressure to suck in snow.
