Question:
Hi Anthony
I have a house built in 1928. The shingles that are on the house were installed over cedar shakes and are in bad condition and need to be replaced. I was wondering if I should have both levels of shingles and shakes removed before I have the new shingles installed? What benefits are there for doing it either way? I am getting mixed answers on this and could use your advice.
Answer:
Most definitely I recommend that you have the roofing contractor remove all lairs of shingles down to the original boards. If the roofing contractor doesn't recommend ripping the shingles all off then they are cheating you. Your new shingles that you put on wont last for the time it should if it is ripped all off.
