Question:
Hi Anthony
I live in St. Catharines Ontario and would like to install a couple of Whirlybirds on my roof. My house is a 2450 sq ft two-story and given the hot summers in southern ontario I think that an attic ventilation device might cool my house down. However, in the winter will an attic ventilation device actually increase my house heating costs?
David
Answer:
The purpose for whirlybirds is not to cool the house but to release worm air trapped in the attic. If your attic has excessive heat your shingles lose year off the life of the shingles. In the winter you actually want your attic to be cool so you don't get condensation build up and cause mold or mildew. It's very important to have proper ventilation in your attic. The cool air remains in your attic during the winter and it doesn't cause your house to become cooler. The insulation in the ceiling prevents heat lose in the house. I also suggest you to use a special attic ventilator called VENMAR roof vents they are much more effective. The website is WWW.venmar.ca
