Question:

2 storey house built 1964, low slope roof with cathedral ceilings in upper storey. Have insulation and ventilation problems as well as needing new roof; ice dam on north side

Answer:

If you’re having problems with ice damming you may not have air flow from your soffit. With older houses this is a common problem. You need to figure out whether your soffits are blocked with insulation or in some cases home owners renew their wooden soffits with new aluminum soffits, but the soffit installer doesn’t cut the wood soffit out allowing the attic to breath. Make sure you have enough roof vents on the roof. If you have cathedral ceilings you will need to have ridge vents installed. If every thing is in accordance to the above mentioned, then when there is an abundance of snow on the roof you may have to hire a roofing professional to clear the snow off the roof before the mailed weather.
