Question:

We have oil furnace heating...the basement is ceramic tiled..it is always cold even with a small electric heater on. What other more effective ways are there to make it warmer..there is about 1000sq.ft. section. Thank you

Answer:

Hello, Because of the tile, it will be hard to feel warm as it will always absorb and radiate the cold from the concrete floor. When you renovated your basement, did you bring the hot air ducts down from the ceiling to approximately twelve inches off the floor? It is very common when a home is built that the hot air ducts for the basement are installed in the ceiling joists. This is very convenient and inexpensive for the builder, but as you know, hot air rises and this is the reason that the ducts should be at floor level. Also, was a cold air return setup done? This is very important for proper circulation. Is your ceiling finished or unfinished? If it is unfinished, you will lose heat up through the first floor. On the assumption that the exterior walls are all drywalled, were they completely insulated? The best way to ensure a warm basement it to typically go with carpeting. I would suggest more electric heaters but this is a costly solution. Since I have not seen your basement I can only guess and offer potential solutions if they exist. If the suggestions I mentioned above have not already been done, then doing them will definitely make a difference in the warmth of your basement. Hoping that this may be of some help to you.
