Question:
I am reovating my basement and about to work on the ceiling. I have found that noise traveles easily from the basemant through to the floor above and thus I want to soundproof. I am putting in a drop ceiling. Should I put a noise reduction fiberglass between the joists? Is this worth the time and expense?
Answer:
Hello,
Over the years, Hello,
In several of the basement renovations I've done, we have, at the Clients' request soundproofed the ceiling. The difference after it is done is quite substantial in noise reduction. A lot depends on the product you use. One of the best on the market is Roxul Soundproofing insulation, but it is also one of the most expensive brands. Whatever product you do choose, ensure that it is specifically for soundproofing as the insulation is woven in a different manner. On the assumption that you are doing the work yourself, saving you labour fees, then I would say that it is well worth the expense and time to do it.
A suggestion for keeping your insulation in place is to take the bag it came in and cut it into two-inch strips and staple it to the underside of each joist as you work your way along.
Since you will be working overhead, ensure that you wear safety glasses and a mask.
Hoping that this has helped you out some. Please feel to ask me any questions you may have down the road. Good luck on your project.
