Question:

Hi Cathrine! My husband and I have been having a bit of a debate concerning flooring and we were hoping you could help us. We have a high quality laminate in a cherry colour in our basement. We are now in the process of renovating our main floor and would like a different laminate flooring on this level. The problem is this: the door leading to the basement is open and when you walk into our home you can see right down into the basement. Our basement is beautiful and is used as an extention of our home. I think the laminate flooring should match, however I'm not super fussy on the basement laminate. It's a uniclic plank style and as I've mentioned before in a light cherry(a colour I really don't like). What we want on the main floor is a dark oak laminate in a smaller plank style. We have two large dogs so hard wood is not an option. My husband thinks that the the cherry and the darker oak will compliment one another and that we will have a runner going down the stairs which will act as a barrier between the two colours. Although I would like the darker laminate, I really think the main floor and basement should match as our basement is in plain view. We don't want to put a door on the basement as our home is quite small and having it open makes our main level look roomier. What do you think? Please help!!! Cory and Terry-Lynne

Answer:

Cory and Terry-Lynne, You can use the different wood finishes, especially since you will introduce a runner between the two. As long as the colour tones blend well from one to another it shouldn't be a problem. You haven't mentioned what the railing and spindles colour is that runs between the two. It should be the same as one or the other, ideally the dark oak. Hope this helps and best of luck with your project.
