Question:
Hi Rob, I purchased 100K rated all-season radial tires a few years back. I'm wondering, from an unbiased point of view, at what tire wear should tires be replaced. I had received wear measurements in 32 (eg. 3/32).
Answer:
Tire ratings are a guide only. 100,000 km rating is used to compare your tires to those with a 120,000km rating. Naturally, everyone's driving habits will affect their tire wear. (E.g. Drivers who start hard and stop hard will wear more rubber off their tires than others. Those who live on dirt roads vs. paved roads will notice differences too.
In terms of tread depth, most new tires have 12/32 of tread, when the tread is worn to the wear bars they must be replaced in order to pass a safety. Those wear bars are set at 2/32. Generally it is recommended that tires be replaced at 4/32 or less. For winter driving, you may want to have at least 5/32.
When comparing tires be sure to look at more than just the km rating, check the speed rating, and the seasonal ratings which are inscribed on most tires.
There are a lot of criteria to consider when buying tires, ranging from vehicle type, to load factors, to driving habits and road conditions. It's best to see qualified experts such as the technicians at your dealership.
