Question:

I have a used fiberglass jet type bathtub. The previous owner tried to seal the jets to the tube with silicone sealant on the uneven outside of the tub. I have sraped away most of it but need to remove the rest to repair the fiberglass. What can I use?

Answer:

It is VERY difficult to remove cured silicone from a surface. However, if you must remove it, follow these suggestions:

Smooth, Non-Porous Surfaces

To remove silicone sealant from these surfaces, first remove as much as possible by cutting, peeling or scraping excess sealant from surface. Then do the following:

On ceramic tile, marble, FormicaŽ, fiberglass, etc:

Use 100-percent mineral spirits (turpentine) and a non-abrasive scouring pad. Use caution while applying this removal solvent and follow directions provided by the manufacturer. Test solvent on a hidden area of the surface to ensure that discoloration will not occur. If discoloration does occur, contact the manufacturer of the surface for further assistance.
On glass surfaces: Use a razor blade to remove as much as possible, then apply mineral spirits. Use caution while using this removal solvent and follow directions provided by the manufacturer. Remove excess with a towel or other suitable cleaning utensil that will not mar the surface, i.e., a non-abrasive pad.

On hard plastics or painted surfaces, including cars:

Use rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Do not use mineral spirits.

Wood Surfaces

We do not recommend use of a wire brush to remove sealant as this could damage the wood. Also, mineral spirits should not be used if the wood has any type of finish on it. Test solvent on a hidden area before applying.

Rough, Porous Surfaces On concrete, brick, wallpaper or other porous or rough surface, remove as much silicone as possible, just as with a smooth surface. If necessary, use a wire brush in conjunction with mineral spirits, unless the surface is wood.

Using Mineral Spirits

When this solvent is used, proper safety precautions must be observed. Mineral spirits are flammable and should be used in a well-ventilated area away from sparks, flames and other sources of ignition. Follow directions on product. Old clothing should be worn.

Hope this helps.
