A rock like deposit from, my guess is, soap / shampoo is half surrounding & covering the drain grate in my ceramic tile shower stall. How do I remove that deposit without damaging the drain grating or the ceramic tile on the shower floor??

I have to remove the grate to use a plumber's snake to open up the drain (the drain is getting noisy), but the deposit is very difficult to pry away.

The pattern on this "soap deposit" matches the swirl of the water going down the drain. The deposit is cream color (more toward white than yellow). I also see evidence of the stuff in the grout lines in the tile floor of the shower.

Hi Taber,

From your description, it sounds like a calcium build up. This occurs where the water is "hard". Throw in soap and shampoo and the result is indeed like a rock.

There is a good product called C.L.R. (Calcium, Limestone, Rust). It is available in most supermarkets and at Canadian Tire. It will do the job. Just follow the directions on the container.It is caustic. Do not expose your skin or eyes to it. Rinse the residue away thoroughly.
