Question:
Hi Bob: I too have a humidity problem in my bathroom. I need to replace the fan as it is not sufficient, however, the ceiling now has mold on it and the paint has started to peel away in several spots, some of them are starting to be quite long. Please guide me through the repair process as I have never done this before.
thank you
Caroline

First step is to kill the mold that is there now. A household cleaner that kills mold and mildew will work to do that. Once the ceiling is cleaned up use a putty knife to scrape off any loose paint. Next apply a "skim" coat of drywall compound to fill in and smooth out the spots where paint has peeled and left depressions in the surface. Allow the compound to dry thoroughly then sand very lightly til the ceiling is smooth again. the amount of sanding is dependant on the amount of compound you put on in the first place. Apply compund sparingly and the sanding job will be reduced considerably. Apply a primer / sealer paint and then finish coat paint to the ceiling and you should be done.
Make sure you run the fan long enough in the future to effectively remove the excess moisture. Turn it on beofre the shower starts and leaving it running 10 min or so after a shower has been taken should do the trick.
