Hi Bob: I have just one question to ask of you. I have acquired a house with a fiberglass shower stall in it manufactured by Owens Corning. I would like to clean it up and I have contacted Owens to obtain cleaning information, however they deny ever manufacturing a fiberglass shower stall even though their logo is imprinted in the base of the stall. With that aside, what product can I use to remove dirt, soap scum, etc. from the sides and base of this unit? I don’t want to use anything that will harm the fiberglass material. Do you have a fibre glass shower or an acrylic shower? the difference is significant in terms of how to clean it. Fiberglass is coated usually with gelcoat to give it the smooth feel and colour. Acetone can be used on most gelcoat to clean it. However, acetone is highly corrosive, has toxic vapours and care must be taken in using it. Acetone is very harmful to acrylic and can melt the finish. You should test a small area of the shower not readily visible to ensure the acetone is not harming the finish of your particular shower. It should also be noted that fibreglass showers have a shorter useful life generally than acrylic showers and if the gelcoat on a fibreglass shower is badly worn it may not be possible to bring back a good finish.
