Question:

Hi,
My bathroom fan rumbles and I can't get it quiet. I took it apart, and held in my hand it's quiet. But after I install it it makes a rumbling sound in addition to the quiet swish of the blade turning.

Answer:

Problems like this are not always easy to solve. It really is a case of going from part to part in the fan and the attached vent to see what might be rattling. Being careful not to touch exposed wiring or get anything close to the fan blades, put your hand on the housing for the fan and see if the noise changes. Then do the same with the vent and the vent opening where it exits the house. If the noise should stop at any point you have probably located the problem.

On occassion the brackets that attach the housing to the joists or the trusses in the house can transmit noise and vibration as well. Putting some insulating material like rubber between the bracket and the mounting point might disapate this noise too.
