Question:
I have a problem with my ceiling in the basement bathroom leaks when the shower or tub upstairs is used. There is also a bathroom fan next to the shower in the basement and I wonder if that is the problem.
Answer:
The fan in the basement bathroom will have nothing to do with the leak in the ceiling coming from the upstairs shower. However I would be concerned about the water from that shower getting into the fan and shorting it out. Definitely the source of the leak is upstairs; either the shower drain or some other part of the plumbing to the shower or the shower stall itself has failed and needs to be examined. Fixing it promptly could save you a lot of damage over time.
