Question:

I have an old bathroom in an old house, probably
built in the 1930's. There is a knob that you turn, made of
steel or metal and when you turn this knob, it is supposed to go
from bath to shower and back. Well, this knob won't turn, and we think it is
inside the wall. Could it be rusted? And if it is inside the wall, I assume it is costly.
Do you have any suggestions? I live in Richmond, Ontario (Ottawa)

Answer:

This knob you turn does the same as a diverter in the spout of a newer tub. I suspect that the diverter valve has become corroded over time and needs to be replaced. There are new valves on the market that can replace the existing valve. However getting access to the plumbing to replace the valve may be tricky. Maybe there is an access panel behind the shower to be able to change it otherwise cutting a hole in the wall behind the shower is likely the only way to open it up sufficiently to replace the valve.
One option to try first may be to take the valve apart from the front (turn water off first). If you can get all the parts out from the front of the valve you may be able to clean them up and free up the valve again. Getting it apart may be almost impossible and could even break it so be prepared to go the replacement route if this fails. There may be a washer to replace in there as well.
