Question:
Hello,
PLEASE help me on what is the real procedure to built a damn shower pan floor. I've been surfing the net past week and had different versions on how to procede to build up a safe, solid and leakproof shower floor.
I consulted Rona part-time employee(s) (aged about 20 years or younger) with more uncertainy and had it with puzzled face look RENO Depot employee or so call expert in the field.
I am renovating the shower room in basement of my house. The drain is cemented in the basement floor and the basement floor is finished with a sub floor (about 2"). That means, I intend to make a new shower room starting from the existent sub-floor.
I am aware of what are the component of the shower floor pan, but where I get confused is when or where we cement the floor and when we use the plastic or vapor cutter? I believe we put the cement on the plywood but when do we put the vopor-cutter? One suggestion is to put the vopor-cutter on the plywood, then cemented on the plastic then add latex on the dry cement? and then mud for the tiles? I already have nailed 6" of plywood boards around the base of the shower area but then I stopped all work because I was not able to figure out what will be next step.
Not sure if this is clear for you, if not it’s because I’m not clear where heading with this project of mine. There ‘s already 500$ of material in my basement waiting to be used. Please get back to me with any questions you may have and I”ll do my best to answer them with more clarity. I will put up a temporary website and put pictures as I progress with my work.
Answer:
I strongly suggest you visit the Schluter Systems web site (www.schlutersystems.com) and look under their product section. They have an entire area devoted to shower systems with excellent pictures and I believe a video is also available. Building a custom shower is one of the more difficult things to attempt in a bathroom and if done wrong there is little to do to correct things but to rip out and start again. They also have a number of products to help you out and make the project go a bit easier.
