Hi Bob,
I live in Ottawa, and lately there are noises coming from my master bedroom bathroom. I assume it is coming from the pipes. The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a car trying to start in the winter when the battery is dead - kind of like a puttering sound. The sounds have been sporadic, but yesterday, it was happening every 20 mins or so. What is wrong? Could it be the temperature as it has been colder lately and then it just warmed up this past October weekend? Will something explode? Any insight would be great.

Not likely that anything is going to explode. You did not mention how old the house is but it probably is an older valve that has a dried out washer that needs replacing. When you hear it again try to get to the bathroom and listen to where the noise is coming from. It could be a sink faucet, the tub/shower valve or even the toilet. Once you locate the source, fixing it is usually not too difficult. Parts are usually available from local plumbing supply stores.
