How does one install a toilet in the basement which is below the level of the plumbing to the sewer? I have no clue how the gravity feed is supposed to work in this kind of situation.

Answer:

It depends on whether or not you are on city water and sewer or a well and septic system. In the city, the water supply and sewer lines are well below the level of your basement and waste water simply follows the laws of gravity until it reaches the main sewer line. In a city you would remove a portion of the cement floor of your basement to allow you to connect the drain from the new toilet location to your main drain line under the cement floor. The main drain can be located under the floor by referencing where floor drains are located, the main stack from upstairs penetrates into the basement floor and the cleanout where the sewer line exits under the footings and to the street. On a well and septic system the solution is quite different and involves the use of a pump to elevate the waste water to the point where the main drain leave the house to the septic tank. the pump can be hooked directly to the toilet or it can be part of a holding tank which holds waste water from other sources in the basement as well and when it reaches a certain level the pumps clears the tank.
