Living in a side-by-side with bath connected--toilet continues to flush unannounced and does it every hour or so
Sounds like the flapper may be leaking water from the tank to the bowl. There could be a number of reasons for this. It may not be adjusted properly and it may not be fully closing; or there may be scale or algae growing on the under side which can prevent it from sealing tight; or it may just be hard from age and unable to seal tight. Try adjusting and cleaning the under side of the flapper first and see if it helps. If that does not work then replace the flapper.
