Question:

am having problems with the flushing of my new toilets with water saving features. We are aware that if you want a longer flush you have to hold the flushing handle down. We are living in a new condo and have had the problem of incomple flushes from day one. They told me that these were problems associated with water saving toilets. They said they would send along two new flushing mechinisms which would replace the 'ball float' type. These were to correct the problem of imprroper flushing. The newer types arrived promptly and I had a plumber install them within a few days. The toilets are still not flushing properly. The one toilet sometimes has to be flushed five or six times before the contents disappears. We have checked the roof vent and everything is in order. My questions are: Is it possible that the plumbing to the roof vent has been improperly installed? Our basement is not finished so eveyrthing is easy to trace. What do you think we could do to remedy the situation? Should I call in the plumbing inspector? Should I revert to the 'float type' assembly which worked a little better? Hugh Wilson

Answer:

Hugh Wilson: Some of the problem may be associated with the type of toilet you have. Unfortunately there are still some 6 litre toilets out there that are non performers. Look on line at www.cwwa.ca (Canadian Water and Waste Water Association) for a report on the performance of toilets. If you have one of the poorer toilets in the testing I would consider having it replaced. Not much of anything can improve its performance as it is in the design of the bowl and tank that will make or break performance. If you have one of the better rated toilets then I would call in a plumber to investigate the situation. If it is bad plumbing heshould be able to tell you quickly.
