Question:
Hi Catherine,
I am looking at redecorating my 9 year old son's bedroom. Covering hhis window right now is a roller blind with a chain (which has to be replaced as it is broken) and a window topper (valance). As his room faces south, we have to have some sort of blind that we can open during the day for light but close at night. What are the trends in window coverings for bedrooms these days? Should I be looking at a roller blind again, wooden blinds, mini horizontal blinds - something else. It is a small bedroom - 10 x 10 and the window frame is pretty well centred in the room. It is approximately 5' wide x 42'' long.
Answer:
Hi Sylvia,
There are many options for window coverings today. Interestingly though, roller shades have made a big comeback and are available in a variety of patterns and colours. The mechanisms have improved too. They can be made without any chains. We carry the Hunter Douglas line that offers a good selection. If interested, I can provide you with the products too. The 2" horizontal blind is also a good choice, since it is easily operated, and lets in light better than the 1" blind. Since it is south facing I would avoid the wood blind, since it will be suspectible to warping in the sun. Since the room is small, it is best to stay with a blind solution and if you want a more finished look to add a valance to go with his bedding. If you have further questions or would like assistance if you are in the Ottawa area, by all means let me know.
