Question:

We are building a two storey house. The hallway leads from the entrance along the oak staircase to the dinette area at the back and the kitchen to the right (now behind the staircase). Would you have some advice on the colour scheme for the ceramic floor tiles. Is a darker colour better than a lighter one (we have 9' ceilings on the main floor). We also want granite counters in the kitchen (very dark green with sparse flecks so mica and gold tones (it is called Emerald Pearl) and oak cupboards. Is it better to have light or dark floors.

I can send you a copy of the floor plan but I don't know how.

Thanks

Answer:

The same floor tile should be used all the way through including into any area where like flooring is being installed, i.e.: powder room. While you have not said what colour the cabinets are, I would suggest a floor tile that is darker rather light, however not too dark. I wouldn't suggest a green floor tile since it will compete with the counter, but go with something that has more warmth, i.e.: gold or terracotta textured tile that has some sand colour through it. Don't just use a light sand colour since it will wash out with the granite. Look at the counter and floor tile together. You haven't asked about the backsplash, but I would suggest a complimentary or same tile as you are using on the floor for the backsplash. Also colour coordinate the grout to match the background of the tile to give a warmer, unified look with less definition between the tiles, using the same grout on the backsplash too. You want your granite to be the feature of the room.

Hope this helps.
