Question:

I plan to tile our breakfast area, kitchen, hall, bath and mudroom. They run together through open doorways. I plan to use tiles set on the diagonal but I am also considering a border. What is more appropriate, a continuous border that runs around the perimeter of the entire area or a seperate border for each room. If the later what is the best spacing for the borders across the doorways? Where there are cabinets and appliances, should the border follow the walls (ie go under the cabinets)or should it follow the base of the cabinets. I have not found a flooring book that discusses this very well.

Answer:

I would suggest using one continuous border around the area, it will maintain a spaciousness that using the same tile gives. As to the cabinet areas, that is a matter of your personal preference, visually I think giving the illusion that is runs behind the cabinet would look best, since lining the cabinets may become a bit busy, particularly if the border is larger.

Hope this helps.
