Question:

We woudl like to install drapery for our dining room bay window. What is the best option for the drapes & rod? Should it go around the bay window, or go across the bay? The paint color in the dining room is gold with white baseboards and crown moudling, and the floors are natural oak. Any suggestions for colors of the drapes for this room?

Answer:

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, so there is no right or wrong answer to your question. If you follow the bay you are able highlight the proportions of the window, however if you wish to open the drapes they will likely stack over your window opening. You are also limited to hardware which can be bent to follow the angles of bay. If you choose to go across the bay you can highlight the porportions of the overall room, yet if you are likely to close the drapes often you will lose the effect of your bay windows. Traditionally folks would often do both with sheers following the line of the bay window and drapery installed across the bay. With rich gold walls you could use deep reds or greens. You also have the classic option of royal blue (think visa!) or gold tones with plenty of texture. Good luck with your project, and thanks for your questions.
