Question:
Hi:
Water supply to my house (on 11 acre lot)is a dug well (about 30ft deep). In the recent weeks, as snow is melting, I have noticed a strong "dirt" smell to the water. This is especially noticable when the water is coming from the hot water tank. I chlorinated the well and the hot H2O tank but the smell persists. I completely drained the well (using a sump pump) and when it recharged the smell was still there. I have recently replaced the pressure tank because it was failing and have ensured that the in line sediment filter is clean. Also have a H2O softener which is regularly recharged. Was wondering if you have any ideas of what may be causing the fojul smell and how I might get rid of it. Thanks Tim
Answer:
Hello Tim, is this well at the front of the house near a raod? If so the melting snow and salt will raise the TDS to a level where the salt will cause bleed though in the softener causing a smell and hrdness to come into the home. I was a little confused, do you have a chlorinating system for the whole home or do you pour chlorine down the well? If you have a whole house system that is where I would start to make sure it is functioning properly. The magnessium rod in your hot water tank should be removed as this can cause smells also. Cheers Martin
