Question:

Hi Martin!

My wife and I have purchased a house about a year ago. There is water softener in the basement, but it hasn't been used since we moved in, and possibly for a while before that. It is a two-tank system and there's been leftover salt in the plastic tank since we bought the house. I would like to restart the softener and was wondering how to do that. I've heard that softeners that haven't functionned in a long time can become clogged or "dry out". I can get you the brand name and model # if it is necessary. The control panel has a function selector and a bunch of metal tabs that look like electrical timer dial - which I'm sure it is in a way!

Thanks for any advice and input you may have!

Answer:

Hello, good question but one with many problems. I would look for paperwork on system and brand name. If company is still in business call them and give them the model number and they may be able to walk you through. As for the system drying and the salt caking and blocking the flow these problems have most likly occured. Each brand name has seperate functions for the metal pins, some when the pin is pushed in the system will clean on that day. The problem and why most people dont't do it is that to get a softener restored it will cost you and they will give you a 1yr warranty and this will lead to years of service and frustration. It may be better in the long run to install a new system especially if water conditions have changed.
