Question:
I have a gas fired insert into what was a wood burning fireplace. The chimney is brick with 10"x12" tile liner. About 25' long straight up. The damper plate was removed and a 5" steel liner was run down to the gas insert. The chimney was capped with an aluminum plate and a gas type top piece fitted. It all works OK. My question is about the heat loss up the chimney. There is a lot of space around the 5" liner. Would it be a good idea to fill the space between the original earthenware liner and the new 5" liner? I am proposing to stuff fibreglass into this empty space. Into the upper half of the space anyway. Do you see any problems with this? I realize the cap section will have to be removed and the liner temporarily supported while the stuffing is being done. Thank you, SJP
Answer:
To stop air from escaping we use Roxall plus insulation at the damper plate.
