Question:
Scenario: ( Two adults and two kids under 12 years old )
Currently I have an electric 40 gallon hot water tank in the home. What’s happening though is that on occasion I’m running out of hot water for the showers. My choice is to either bump up the volume to a 60 gallon tank or go with an oil fired 40 gallon unit. I fear the electric will be extremely expensive to heat due to it’s volume. To go oil will work since I have an oil furnace beside it. There is an existing chimney with a flue that enters the wall at a height of 53 inches from the floor. Is there a unit that I can have installed to satisfy my requirements? … or do I just up the size of the rental hot water heater and absorb the electrical costs?
Your thoughts and suggestions appreciated
Answer:
Stay with the electric heater and bump up the size. Oil fired water heaters are very inefficient (and use both oil and electricity). Also, you may want to think about purchasing a tank instead of renting.
